Hound Hunt Checklist
A general starting point for reviewing the Hound Gear categories before an outing. Your hunt plan, the dogs, and local conditions determine what belongs on your list.
Follow the hunt plan and equipment instructions, and confirm questions about local requirements or equipment use with the person leading the hunt.
Tracking systems
- Confirm the tracking system and any assigned accessories are included in the hunt plan.
- Review the equipment instructions and the group’s expectations for setup and use.
- Check that everyone responsible for the equipment knows how it fits into the hunt plan.
Collars and leads
- Match collars and leads to the dogs and roles identified in the plan.
- Check fit and condition using the equipment maker’s instructions.
- Keep assigned collars and leads together so they are easy to identify before departure.
Dog apparel and boots
- Consider the local weather, terrain, and conditions when reviewing apparel and boots.
- Confirm that the selected items fit the dog and are appropriate for the planned outing.
- Review care and use instructions before packing them.
Dog boxes and transport
- Confirm the planned dog box or transport setup is ready for the dogs and vehicle being used.
- Check the setup against its instructions and the trip’s local requirements.
- Make sure the people responsible for transport understand the loading and travel plan.
Before departure
- Review the hunt plan, expected local conditions, and any applicable requirements with the person leading the hunt.
- Confirm the equipment list matches the dogs, route, and responsibilities for this outing.
- Resolve questions about equipment selection or use with the hunt leader before heading out.
